A message from the Partners
Simplicity through innovation. Nexgen applies this principle in our approach to social and environmental responsibility. We offer high-quality packaging products made with sustainable components. As a family-owned business, we believe that the next generation merits a healthy planet. Nexgen strives to integrate practical, sustainable actions into all of our business operations.
We aid our clients in making informed packaging decisions. Our environmentally friendly options range from recycled, FSC-certified paper to eco-sizing™ of labels and products. We believe that the highest quality options can be eco-friendly and cost-competitive.
Nexgen is committed to industry improvements. We ensure that social and environmental responsibility claims are independently substantiated through our partnerships with Business for Social Responsibility, Monadnock Paper Mills and the Forest Stewardship Council, and the Sustainable Apparel Coalition and the Outdoor Industry Association’s EcoWorking Group. In mid-2011, Nexgen expanded our sustainability efforts by launching a comprehensive corporate sustainability plan to build social and environmental goals and performance targets into all aspects of our business.

Nexgen is dedicated to high-quality solutions, treating each client uniquely in our consideration of their packaging goals. We can show our clients ways to achieve environmentally friendly packaging without sacrificing quality or increasing costs. Recycled paper program. From 2009 to 2010, we experienced a 50% growth in demand for all grades of post-consumer waste paper. In a collaborative partnership with Monadnock Paper Mills (MPM), we created 80% and 100% PCW multiple weight paper options that are readily available in Asia. The impact of our recycled paper program has been considerable in reducing water, energy and wood use. These estimates were obtained using the Environmental Paper Network’s Paper Calculator. www.papercalculator.org
Eco-sizingTM our products. Nexgen magnifies the environmental benefits of recycled paper by eco-sizingTM product packaging wherever possible. We work with clients to ecosize tickets, tags, and packaging to increase efficiencies and maintain costs. This facilitates an easy choice to move towards more eco-friendly products, boosting client image and commitment to the environment. To read an example of how eco-sizingTM can succeed as well as learn more about other eco products, please contact us. We will continue to investigate how to incorporate high-quality design capabilities with independently-certified sustainable elements into our entire suite of products.
Other Eco Products
Nexgen has also worked with MPM to create PCW recycled paper for pocket tags, flashers, and other packaging. Nexgen and MPM also produced 100% PCW, FSC-certified fiber Envi Ecokraft paper that mimics the look of unbleached kraft paper and chipboard, with no white edges to keep the look authentic and clean. We work to find solutions to clients’ desires for more eco-friendly inks and processing materials as well as packaging materials.

Nexgen is committed to protecting people and the environment from the risks posed by harmful substances. We have created a comprehensive Restricted Substances Manual for our suppliers and partners that defines standards and accountability through our supply chain. Our list follows the industry’s top standard and customer-specific standards in identifying and eradicating harmful toxins from our products to go beyond government regulations across all domestic and foreign markets.
The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) regulates the safety of products made and imported for sale in the United States. These regulations are especially important for children’s products in reducing exposure to toxins such as lead and phthalates. Additional regulations such as the U.S. Toxics in Packaging Prevention Act and the European Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste also regulate heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium.
We have Quality Control and Quality Assurance practices in place to test for and reduce packaging and product toxins. Products at the development and production stage undergo testing for metals and metal alloys using an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer to ensure that products meet the standards for the desired market. The XRF testing (machine shown) is set up to ensure our packaging products satisfy the heavy metal requirements defined in legislation as well as customer requests. It also helps us identify any potential issues with lead content in items such as heat transfers or metal grommets that may be subject to CPSIA. Third party laboratories also inspect products and keep our suppliers up to date with the latest regulations and testing procedures.
